The Path

How to Become a Mason

Freemasonry is the oldest, largest Fraternity in the world. Its members have included Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Statesmen, Generals, Admirals, Supreme Court Chief Justices, corporate CEOs, opera stars, movie stars, and probably, your next door neighbor.

01

Express Your Interest

Reach out to the lodge by phone, email, or by attending one of our open events. A brother will be happy to answer your questions and tell you more about what Freemasonry means to him personally.

02

Do you Believe

Do you believe in God? Do you believe in honor and that a man has a responsibility to act with honor? Are you willing to give help to your Brothers when they need it? Do you believe that you have a responsibility to leave the world a better place? Do you agree that man should show compassion for others, that goodness of heart is among the most important of human values?

03

Submit a Petition

Complete a petition for membership, which will be reviewed by the lodge. You will need to be vouched for by a Master Mason who knows you, or be introduced to the lodge through our inquiry process.

04

Be Balloted

The lodge votes by ballot on your petition. Freemasonry is a voluntary association, and the ballot ensures that every new member is welcomed unanimously by his future brothers.

05

Receive the Degrees

If accepted, you will receive the three degrees of Freemasonry — Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason — each a ceremony rich in symbolism and moral instruction.

06

Join the Brotherhood

As a Master Mason, you become a full member of Étoile Polaire Lodge No.1 and a brother to Masons around the world — joining a fraternity that has endured for more than three centuries.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. Freemasonry is not a religion and does not replace a man's faith. It is open to men of all religious backgrounds who believe in a Supreme Being. Religious and political discussions are not permitted in lodge.

Is Freemasonry a secret society?

Freemasonry is a society with secrets, not a secret society. Our existence, membership, and purposes are publicly known. Certain modes of recognition and ceremonial details are kept among members, as they have been for centuries.

How much does it cost to join?

There is an initiation fee and annual dues, which vary by lodge. Contact us directly for current fee information. No man should feel that cost is a barrier — speak with us.

How much time does it require?

Étoile Polaire Lodge meets on the 1st Thursday of each month. Beyond that, your level of involvement is up to you. Many brothers are very active; others attend when they can. The lodge welcomes both.

Can I ask a Mason about joining?

Traditionally, a man must ask to join — Masons do not solicit membership. However, you are always welcome to reach out to us with questions. We are happy to talk.

What happens at a lodge meeting?

Lodge meetings include ritual work (degree ceremonies for new members), lodge business, and fellowship. Dinner is shared before the meeting. The atmosphere is formal but warm.
